BINAY OPTO — A Company Profile
Binay Opto Electronics Private Ltd. has been a pioneer in the field of LED technology in India and the world since 1983
The BINAY group first started with the manufacture of filament lamps in 1947, when our Technical Adviser Kumar K. Rohatgi set up India’s first indigenous electric lamp factory in Patna. K.K. Rohatgi is a member of the ETDC-23 committee of ISI (Indian Standards Institute), which was the group in charge of drafting of specifications for all Electric Lamps. (All ISI Standard Specifications for electric bulbs in India carry his name, as many were drafted by him.) BINAY has had experience in pioneering the development of all types of light sources over the years in India, such as GLS lamps (500W-2000W) in 1950, fluorescent tubes (1956), high pressure mercury vapour (1956) and many others. Our Director Vineet K. Rohatgi is currently Member, BIS Committee ETD 49 for LED Lighting and Member, BIS Committee ETD 50 for LVDC Distribution Systems.
As such, the BINAY group has been in the field of lamps and lighting technology for over 50 years.
Under the able direction of our Technical Adviser, BINAY has invented many LED lighting products in India and has many patents to its credit. Over the years, BINAY has manufactured almost all kinds of electric lamps – Railway Signalling lamps, Aircraft Runway lamps, Naval lamps, Infrared lamps, Photographic lamps, HPMV lamps, and Fluorescent tubes. In 1965, our group concern had a collaboration with Toshiba of Japan to manufacture Fluorescent tubes on high-speed Automatic machines. In 1970, BINAY developed T5 fluorescent tubes for emergency light applications.
In 2008, our Technical Adviser Kumar K. Rohatgi was felicitated by Dr. Ajay Mathur, Director, Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE), for his work on LEDs and LED Lighting in India (see picture below). BEE is the Nodal Agency under the Power Ministry for sponsoring and promoting Energy Efficiency in India.
As early as 1983, we switched our focus to LED technology and were awarded our first Indian Patent for the world’s first energy-saving LED pilot light in 1986. Subsequently, through continuous R&D, we have developed a very wide range of LED Signalling products, including Warning and Alarm lights, Crane busbar indicators, and LED Railway Signal lights.
In 1995, we invented the world’s first LED Aviation Obstruction Light, which has a life of 20 years (thus eliminating the issues of replacement and maintenance at extensive heights on tall structures such as chimney stacks) and also saves 95% energy. We have been awarded a Patent for the same. A host of other patents have followed since then. Subsequent developments have been made with LED-based Medium Intensity Types ‘A’, ‘B’, and ‘C’, and High Intensity Types ‘A’ and ‘B’ (as per International Civil Aviation Organization specifications).
In 1998, we developed India’s first LED Traffic Signal lights. We also set up a production plant to manufacture chip-level LEDs as well as our revolutionary LED Chip-On-Board (COB) design products for customised and special applications.
Since 1992, BINAY has been manufacturing its Architectural range of LED Lighting for application in decorative and illuminating lighting applications. Today, we have a vast range of single colour and RGB coloured LED lighting devices for applications such as Downlights, Cove Lighting, Mood Lighting, Building Facade Lighting, RGB Effect Lighting (capable of generating up to 16 million colours), and Underwater lighting.
In 2002, we started the manufacture of High Power LEDs of 1-Watt and 3-Watt, and multichip LEDs of 10-Watt rating. In 2003, we began the manufacture of White LEDs using Phosphor technology. Since 2004, we began work on LED Street Lights, and have developed a range of LED Street Light models since then. In 2007, we developed our Eagle-Eye LED Streetlight (which has become our most popular and superior model), to replace conventional HPSV Street Lights (resulting in a power saving of 70% per light), with a performance life of 20 years.
We are working with leading architects, and premier builders such as DLF, Ambuja Neotia, and others, and have done several LED lighting projects under their auspices. We are also working with several international lighting consultants.
Today, we have a vast range of LED lighting products including indoor lighting, factory lighting, and office and home lighting, as our largest markets are in the field of LED Lighting for illumination applications. We have developed a whole host of LED Downlighters for illumination, all of which can achieve 70% to 90% power saving (which results in the product paying for itself within a period of 1-2 years by way of saving in energy costs). As early as in 2008, we executed an entire commercial office-cum-factory space in Calcutta, which has been entirely illuminated with our LED Downlighters (thus reducing the power consumption on the lighting load from 4.5KW to 1.2KW only). The power reduction was so dramatic that the entire lighting load is now solar powered (i.e., off-grid). This unique project was inaugurated by our State Power Minister, Sri Mrinal Banerjee.
In 2009, we were favoured with an order for clean-room based LED Downlighters from Hindustan Unilever Ltd. for the lighting of their cleanroom areas in their new project in Uttarakhand. The entire cleanroom area of 6,500 square meters in the plant has been lighted with our LED Downlighters. Over the last decade, we have completed LED Lighting Projects in several international 5-Star Hotels in India, such as The Claridges Surajkund, The Four Seasons Hotel, Mumbai, The Hyatt, Pune, Ista Hotel Amritsar, Ista Hotel Pune, and Swissotel Neotia Vista, Calcutta (in 2009, this was probably the world’s first LED-lighted hotel). In these hotels, we have worked with international lighting consultants such as Be-Lit, Bangkok, and ILD (International Lighting Design), Chicago.
In 2009, we completed the installation of the headquarters location of the Ambuja Ecospace offices in Calcutta with our LED Downlights, which has been installed with BINAY 2’x2’PowerLED Recess Mount Luminaires, BINAY 6SR Series PowerLED Downlighters, and BINAY MR16 PowerLED Spotlights. The performance of the installed luminaires has been judged to be extremely effective. Adequate lux levels have been attained, and the luminaires have been designed with prismatic diffusers to minimise glare to users
Subsequent to the above installation, in view of their positive experience with our LED products, Ambuja Realty awarded us the contract for the complete LED lighting installation of their 5-Star Hotel in Calcutta (The Swissotel Neotia Vista, which is a joint venture of the international Raffles Group and Ambuja Realty), where the public lighting is running entirely on BINAY LEDs. Changing the project design to LED lighting has resulted in 85% savings in electric power, and the hotel is saving up to 100 kilowatts of power daily while enjoying maintenance-free operation for the next 15 years (our warranty – 5 years).
In 2012, we have done the complete changeover of common area lighting (four floors) to LEDs at Metro Shopping Mall in Calcutta. The entire public areas have been entirely illuminated with BINAY LED products, resulting in dramatic power savings.
DRIVER-LESS LED Lighting with BINAY’s Injected PLCDC Nanogrid Technology
Since 2009, we have completed various major industrial projects of LED Lighting with our revolutionary Driver-Less Injected PLCDC Nanogrid Technology, with which we completely eliminate the use of the LED Driver — thus ensuring safe and reliable LED lighting. We are glad to advise that this technology has now been proven over the last several years with several installations at various industrial and commercial organisations, such as CESC Ltd., several departments at Nuclear Fuel Complex Hyderabad, BARC Trombay, BARC Kalapakkam, IGCAR Kalapkkam, GAIL India, as well as other organisations such as Ambuja Neotia (Swissotel, Altair, and others), GKB Ltd. (Gurgaon), O2 Hotel (Calcutta), and many others.
We are now actively promoting LED Lighting as a Green Lighting Technology which can dramatically reduce power consumption and resultant CO2 emissions, and encourage the use of solar-power LED Lighting systems for offices, factories, retail establishments to reduce their carbon footprint. This is being done in conjunction with our revolutionary Driver-Less Injected PLCDC Nanogrid Technology.
